Hi guys !
Well, today I want to tell you about my penpal's experience.
I always thought having a penpal with who you can have a reciprocal exchange was an amazing thing !
As I started Japanese in high school with the CNED and no proper teacher, I was worried about the evolution of my language skills. I was right. When you just can't practice a language, can't have an exchange with a same language speaker, things are becoming quite hard...
That's why I decided to find a Japanese speaker with who I could talk thanks to the website Japan Guide. I think this latter is really good. Furthermore, you're not forced to give information such as your address or even a picture of your face.
Anyway. I finally found a Japanese girl from Kyûshû. At first sight, she seemed... too enthusiastic I suppose.
We are the same age, but, we don't really think the same way, I still suppose.
I'm the kind of person who is deeply independent, can work hard on something, never giving up, who, as you know, loves learning. All that because of the life I lived. Oh, nothing really hard, right, I was loved and had all I needed, of course, but, I learned to be alone and, overall, counting on myself and doing things on my own.
And, you know, she is like every normal teen girl : she wants to hang out, doesn't seem to like studying... But she is kind, obviously!
As Japanese English curses system is pretty bad, she can't learn well at school, is often busy or tired because of her part-time job, so can't call me (on Skype) when we're supposed to. Moreover, as she is not fluent at English, and I'm trying my best to improve my poor Japanese skills, without being intermediate level, we can't communicate very well. We often call to work on tests but, because of the language barrier, we built a strange relationship.
Wait, wait, wait, I know what you're thinking : she said it was good, but she realized it was not, so she's just telling us to never do such that thing.
That's absolutely not true ! Let's continue my story...
As I said, she often can't call. First times it happened, she was replaced by her brother. This guy, which is, kind of different from her, has an amazing English, wants to learn and likes languages... What else ? More seriously, I can learn both English and Japanese when I'm speaking with him. Our conversations are not full of blanks, and we just speak like if we were friends, counting stories, experiences, laughing... Facilitated by the fact that "on est sur la même longueur d'onde", as we say in French.
As a conclusion, I would say that I'm going to the city where they live in October and I know that I have somebody ready to help me and make me discover the town !
If you ever had bad experiences with penpals, let's give it a new chance, let's try again until you find someone you get on well with! This is such a good experience, you can make friends, and learn about other cultures, languages, ways of life, ...
If you have some questions, feel free to ask and I'll try to answer asap ! And tell me if you ever had this kind of experience and what did you thought about!
Bye bye
